Top 5 Music Must-Dos at Vivid 2017

05 June 2017

Who doesn’t love whirling colours, flashing strobes and marvellously synchronised beats?

Vivid Sydney begins on 26th May, and everyone’s excited. (Admit it. You are.)
It all started with lights – but music has quickly become one of the event’s biggest drawcards.
Over 23 nights, there’ll be more than 400 music gigs rolled out, including The Necks (4th June), The Radiators (10th June), Laura Marling (12th June), and Jack Colwell (17th June). And there’ll be plenty of unique soundscape installations for total sensory experiences.
Here are 5 musical must-dos:
1. MUSIC|box
Tucked within The Rocks is Cadman’s Cottage – Sydney’s second-oldest surviving residential building, built in 1816. Every night during Vivid, it’ll be transformed into MUSIC|box, an interactive ‘keyboard’ enabling participants to compose music and see it translated into displays of colour and sound.

2. Women in Electronic Music
On 17th June, enjoy a massive showcase called ‘Women in Electronic Music’ at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory. Hosted by Flexmami, it will feature some of Sydney’s pioneering producers, beat-makers and DJs, including Linda Marigliano, Annie Bass, and Miss Blanks. Plus, adding an awesome international element, American hip-hop queen UNIIQU3 is on the bill.

3. Magicians of the Mist
Every half an hour during Vivid, above Cockle Bay Wharf, Magicians of the Mist will blur the lines between art and technology: 12 huge pumps will throw 28 tonnes of water skyward, and projections will cast enormous images onto the walls of water. And all of that will be synchronised with lasers, flames, fireworks, and – of course – spectacular tunes.

4. An Immersive Cabaret Experience
Back by popular demand is ‘Hidden Sydney’, an immersive cabaret experience in Kings Cross. Across four floors of ‘The Nevada’ (an infamous former Sydney brothel), you can delve into historical magnificence and rub shoulders with madams of the night, drag queens, crooks, and entertainers (to name but a few). It’s a bit like looking back in time, to when the Cross was dangerously devious and marvellously mischievous...

5. Full Moon Party @ Bungalow 8
On 8th June, Bungalow 8 will host the Colourblast Full Moon Party, a multi-room sound and sight extravaganza comprising UV installations, interactive performances, a silent disco with colour-coded headphones, and an all-star DJ line-up with artists such as Social Hooliganz, DJ Sol, Ember, and Felixx.

Get ready to boogie under the stars (and strobes).
