Audition and Entry

Entrance is by audition, short interview and musicianship assessment.

Classical Performance Applicants Must:

  • Perform TWO contrasting pieces of music on their chosen instrument.
  • The total of the two pieces should not exceed 15 minutes.
  • An accompanist may be provided on request, if required.
  • Provide Certified Academic transcripts of previous study (including HSC or VCE). Year 12 school leavers should provide this once received.
  • Provide a resume/portfolio that covers ALL musical experience.

ALL degree & diploma courses at AIM involve an audition and/or interview to assess skills & aptitude to study. The audition process allows AIM to assess potential & advise on the best course of study. The applicant also has the opportunity to ask questions regarding study at AIM.

What Happens After You Apply?

A member of the AIM Admissions team will contact you by phone to organise your audition/interview date and time, and a confirmation email will be sent to you. They will also inform you about the interstate & international submission process if this is appropriate to your case.

Audition Tips

  • Take time to fully prepare for your audition. Choose songs/tracks carefully. Rehearse (performers) or review your compositions & mixes (production students) so you know them as well as possible.
  • Choose songs that you feel most confident with, that represent your interest & abilities.
  • Remember, we are not here to judge you, but to help you get to where you want to go, so try to relax and enjoy it.

International & Interstate Applicants

International & Interstate Applicants are required to send a DVD of their performance in lieu of a live audition or a DVD/CD of their creative work in lieu of a production interview. A phone/skype interview may also be required. For all students whose previous education had not been conducted in English: a minimum IELTS Overall Band Score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 (Please note: for Graduate Studies, the IELTS Overall Band Score must be 6.5 with no band less than 6.0), or equivalent English assessment is required. 
The IELTS cannot be more than 2 years old from the commencement of the course.

Supporting Documents & Previous Study

Applicants are expected to have completed the NSW Higher School Certificate or equivalent and are asked to provide evidence of prior studies. All supporting documents submitted with the application must be coloured copies or scans of the original, and AIM reserves the right to contact the issuing organisation for verification purposes. Where a mature-aged applicant does not have secondary education qualifications or equivalent qualifications, the applicant may be required to undertake a tertiary preparation assessment. Domestic students wishing to use VET qualifications as equivalence to NSW HSC, must have completed full time study of no less than 2 years in an accredited Certificate IV level course or higher.

Credit Transfer - Recognition of Prior Studies (RPS)

“Credit transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications” (AQF January 2013)

Recognition of Prior Studies in the form of Credit Transfer at AIM is an assessment process used to determine the extent to which a student has achieved the required learning outcomes to receive credit towards to equivalent AQF level studies at AIM. This may result in the granting of the grade of Advanced Standing in a specific AIM unit and exemption from that unit.

Recognition of Prior Learning and Experience (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit (National Quality Council Training Packages glossary).

RPL at AIM is conducted via written statement in which applicants address specific criteria. It allows candidates to demonstrate how they will use the knowledge, skills, abilities and personal qualities gained through life experience to succeed in studies at the AIM.

RPL is an optional, alternative pathway to tertiary study intended for people without formal educational qualifications.

If You Are Unsuccessful

If a student is not successful in the audition/interview for a Bachelor Degree, counselling and/or a second audition or interview may be arranged to determine the best possible strategy for assisting the student to achieve their academic aspirations. This may involve being offered a place in our Diploma of Music course. It is possible for Diploma students to transfer into the Bachelor of Music, based on their progress and results.
